The senior engineer who built the system might be in meetings, on vacation, or working on something else. The domain expert might not have time until next week. The system architect might be focused on a different problem. Knowledge was a scarce resource, and access to it was a bottleneck.

AI-first development creates a new model of collaboration. Instead of humans collaborating with humans, we have humans collaborating with AI agents, and humans collaborating with other humans about how to work with AI agents.

The most effective teams have developed practices for this new model. They have patterns for when to use AI-first exploration and when to use human-first judgment. The engineers who thrive are the ones who can start with questions rather than solutions, who can leverage AI to expand possibilities before narrowing down, and who can break free from the inertia of familiar workflows.

Instead of spending time on routine implementation, engineers spend time on problem definition, solution evaluation, and system design.
